Earthquakes playoff hopes in jeopardy

The San Jose Earthquakes fell to the Western-Conference leading Seattle Sounders 3-1 Wednesday night at PayPal Park.

With the loss, the Earthquake’s hopes of making the Major League Soccer Playoffs dwindle as they sits in ninth place in the conference. Only seven games remain in the schedule to make up a four-point deficit in the standings to be in a playoff spot.

The Sounders, on the other hand, showed why they’re the team to beat in the Western Conference.

Seattle opened the scoring early through forward Raul Ruidiaz as he found the back of the net twice in the first half. The first being a left-footed curler in Minute 25 and a penalty in Minute 42.

San Jose’s defense let the fans down again to begin the second half as Seattle scored to make it 3-0.

The Earthquakes responded shortly after conceding the third goal by scoring their only goal of the game, which was courtesy of a Sounders own goal.

However, the San Jose offense failed to threaten Seattle, only having 3 shots on goal all game. The Earthquakes look to get back on track Saturday against the Vancouver Whitecaps in Canada.
