MLK Library evacuated after woman barricades herself in bathroom

This morning, the university police department evacuated Martin Luther King Jr. Library after an armed suspect barricaded herself in a library bathroom.

A custodian reported the woman around 10 a.m. according to an ABC7 article.

UPD Captain Michael Santos said in a news conference this afternoon that they evacuated MLK Library within minutes. .

“Fortunately, it's winter break at this time we had commencement last week. So it was less population, as far as the library was concerned,” Santos said. “And so the evacuation was a lot smoother.”

UPD was able to determine that the woman was armed with a replica gun, making her an “unarmed barricaded suspect.”

“The importance was for containment, rather than going ahead and trying to take her in custody and using force,” Santos said.

The woman peacefully surrendered at 1:13 p.m.

The suspect is currently in the custody of UPD, with the charges against her still being determined.

According to the news conference, UPD is also trying to determine the woman’s mental health status.

MLK Library will be closed for the remainder of today after police responded to reports of an armed individual according to an AlertSJSU message.
