A third-party contractor struck a Pacific Gas & Electric gas distribution line near San Jose State while digging into the ground and caused a gas leak Friday afternoon, said a PG&E spokesperson.

Utility crews shut off the leak at 2:15 p.m. and are still working to make repairs.  However, SJSU tweeted an update advising people to stay away from the area, at 2:18 p.m.

No injuries have been reported and only one customer temporarily lost access to their gas, said PG&E spokesperson Brandi Merlo.

The crew dug on a spot with an underground service alert marking which requires hand tools to be used for any on-site digging within 2 feet of the gas line while excavating the area.

Police appeared to be letting in some local residents back into their homes.

PG&E is still investigating how the construction crew ruptured the line.
