Temporary domestic violence restraining order issued against A.S. President

This story was last updated on Oct. 4. Jonathan Austin, Chelsea Nguyen Fleige, Mauricio La Plante, Marci Suela, Kelsey Valle, Vicente Vera contributed reporting to this story.

The temporary domestic violence restraining order issued against Associated Students President Branden Parent followed a mutual no-contact order issued by the San Jose State Title IX office, according to court records.

“The Title IX office will issue a No Contact Order (NCO) when a student reports repeated incidents of unwelcome attention -- in person, via social media, phone calls, emails, etc. -- or as part of a larger response to instances of dating or domestic violence, stalking, or sexual misconduct,” SJSU Title IX officer Tracey Tsugawa said in an email statement.

In court documents, a former SJSU student detailed multiple instances when Parent allegedly violated the no-contact order, which was issued on Aug. 29.

“If violations of the [no-contact order] occur during an ongoing Title IX investigation, unless the violations are egregious (in which case the Student Conduct office will respond immediately), the allegations of violations are incorporated into the Title IX investigation process and if substantiated, they are adjudicated at the end of the investigation process,” Tsugawa said.

The Santa Clara County Family Court will hold a hearing on Oct. 9 to determine whether to grant a full restraining order to the former student against Parent.

Parent has subpoenaed records of security camera footage and “All StarRez access records” to refute claims made by the former student in the temporary restraining order application, according to documents provided by his lawyer.

Allegations of assault and harassment were made against Parent on Twitter, Thursday afternoon.

The Spartan Daily spoke with the former SJSU student on the condition of anonymity, who described herself as a survivor of alleged harassment and stalking from Parent.

On Sept. 20, a temporary domestic violence restraining order was issued against Parent by the former student. According to the order granted by a Santa Clara County Superior Court judicial officer, Parent was told to stay 200 yards away from his alleged victim and cease any contact, with an exception reducing it to 100 feet if he was on campus for a legitimate purpose.

The former student said that she “100%” left SJSU because of the A.S. president’s alleged behavior toward her.
