The San Jose Police Department released a photo of a man who has been named a “person of interest” in a shooting that resulted in multiple bullets striking the Martin Luther King Jr. library and a city parking garage Thursday evening.

According to the press release the man was photographed at the scene of the crime.

The source of the photos is unknown.

Investigators have not named the man in the photo as a suspect and said they want to bring him in for questioning.

Multiple photos show the man with a blue and grey backpack and one shows him wearing a medical mask.

The exact spot the man was caught on photo was not released.

Police said multiple bullets struck the two buildings at approximately 6:21 p.m., Thursday evening.

Police declined to comment beyond what was detailed in the press release.

No victims or injuries from the shooting incident have been reported, San Jose Police Department Sgt. Enrique Garcia wrote in an email.

No suspects have been identified or apprehended, Thursday, Garcia said.

An Alert SJSU text went out at 6:59 p.m. and said University Police Department and SJPD officers were responding to reports of shots fired near the MLK library.

Shattered windows on the seventh and eighth floors of the library could be seen from San Fernando Street.

Stairwell and elevator access to the seventh and eighth floors of the library were cut off by officers during the investigation.

The other floors of the library were not evacuated.

Police also canvassed the roof and stairwell of the parking garage above Flames.

San Jose State University released a statement at 9:05 p.m. that said no injuries have been reported from the incident, and only property damage occurred.

International business freshman Garrett Bruner said he was studying on the eighth floor with a group of students when he heard a loud pop.

He said another student asked if a light had exploded.

Then Bruner realized what had happened and noticed the bullet hole in the window, right above the desk he had been studying at.

“There’s glass all over my stuff, all over me, all over the floor,” Bruner said.

Bruner said he panicked.

“We’re like, ‘What do we do? Do we need to hide? We don’t know where to go from here,’ ” Bruner said.

He and other students then went down to the library atrium to report the incident.

Speech language pathology graduate student James Chow was studying in the library after the seventh and eighth floor were shut down and was not surprised that the incident occurred.

“I can study less and it’ll still happen,” Chow said.

Chow does not see what SJSU can do about the shooting and does not think avoiding the library or studying because of the shootings will make a difference.

“I feel like I hear so much about [shootings], I’m kind of numb,” Chow said.

At 9:04 p.m. UPD stated in an email that its investigation of the incident had concluded and SJPD would continue to conduct the investigation.

The Spartan Daily will update the story as information becomes available.
